SMS messages received from 1990006 and SAFEDIVERT 1300659707

We have now had numerous complaints regarding SAFEDIVERT 1990006 and 1300659707 numbers (www.safedivert.com.au/www.safedivert.com).

Our Gumtree users reported receiving sms messages similar to below examples;

1: "Alison from GUMTREE wants to chat and maybe meet , TXT YES TO CONNECT NOW! SAFEDIVERT 1300659707 2end txtstop msg5aud10subscript"

2: "FREE MESSAGE" Hi Terry, Lisa from GUMTREE wants to chat & maybe meet! TXT YES TO CONNECT NOW!"

Gumtree has not, and will not disclose your personal details (including your phone number) to any third party, as detailed in our privacy policy http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/p-Privacy!

Please treat your phone number as confidential. We do not recommend divulging any personal information to anyone without knowing more about the person you are dealing with!

We suspect that the people who are posting these ads are collecting your contact details from the replies received to ads posted by them on Gumtree. Then with the number you have provided to these hoax ads they send the above SMS messages from 1990006 which prompts you to reply “TXT YES TO CONNECT NOW!” then unwillingly without knowing the terms of conditions of use you agree to the service by simply texting YES!

Please do not reply with a response to this and the other numbers listed below as this is what seems to trigger the charges! If you ignore and don’t reply to any messages no charges will be applied to your phone bill! Please ignore any/all messages received from 19910006! As advised above Gumtree has no association with (www.safedivert.com.au/www.safedivert.com). We do not endorse, or recommend them.

From our understanding the service is promoted as a way to contact people via a third party using SMS messages, anonymously, without disclosing your phone number. According to Safedivert terms and conditions “Current service costs 19910006 - ($5 to send, FREE to receive), 19910007 - (Carrier charge to send, $5 to receive) 19735555 - ($1.10 to send, $5 to receive), 5008 ($3.50 to send, FREE to receive) In order to stop the service you are required to respond; thus potentially incurring a $5 charge.

If you decide to report this to the Police, please firstly report this to us directly at http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/c-ContactUs including your name and contact information and the Ad ID you replied to! Then we can pass all information that we have directly to them.
