HI I LOST $453.00 DUE TO A CAMERA SCAM ON THIS SITE DEALING WITH A THIRD PARTY AND STUPID ME SENT MONEY OVERSEAS.AND WITH DOCUMENTATION FROM DHL EXPRESS (OBVIOUSLY FAKE). BE VERY CAREFUL ON HERE. BLAME MYSELF PARTLY BUT THERE ISN'T ENOUGH SECURITY ON HERE.

THIS IS HOW THE GENERAL SCAM WENT.

Thank you for your response.

Yes the camera is in perfect condition. I use it only one day. I am selling it because i have just moved and i need the money urgently in order to arrange the new place with my family.

I will came back next year. The product is here with me, in London. I don't have who i ship it. My family is here with me.

So this is what i suggest, i think this is the best and safest way for the two of us.

I will ship it to you. I will support all the shipping taxes. Shipping will take usually: 48 hours.

Obviously we need a safe way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after.

I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast!

The solution is provided by a international shipping company DHL.

It is explained step by step below:

- First I will need your shipping information (i.e. name and address).
1. With this info, I will go to a DHL Location send the item to your name and address provided.
2. DHL will inspect the package and all the legal papers.
- As soon as the item is in DHL custody, you will receive a notification from them.
1. After that, you will make the payment for the item, and send the payment information to DHL for verification.
2. DHL will verify the payment information, and if everything is in order, they will deliver the product to your door step, and you will verify that everything is as supposed.
3. You will inform DHL that everything is in order, and they will release the payment to me.
- If by any reason, you will not be satisfied with the package, you will return the product to DHL with no expense!

I will be waiting for your email.
Best Regards.

Expensive lesson there.

Lets hope others learn from it. I would bet your money is in fact in Nigeria or the like, and the details you have posted will either be fake, or stolen from someone else scammed.

Hi Guys,

If you're ever unsure of an item, please check out our safety tips first: http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/p-SafetyTips.

Please be cautious with any seller/buyer offering Western Union or other similar payment methods.

If you feel that an item may be scam, please contact the Gumtree administration team, so that we can have a look at the ad.

You should add a banner saying to be wary of payment methods such as Western Union - after all, your parent company, ebay, bans them on their site. Wink

Tough lesson to learn but its not up to GumTree to look out for all of the people here.
You need to treat Gum Tree as you would The Trading Post newspaper - would you really send money to a stranger that advertised in the newspaper? Really?
eBay even with there feedback system is not even 100% safe - a lot of new people dont look at the feedback system and jump right in and buy an extra cheap item and get scammed as a result , however eBay have a system in place to protect against most scams , or they offer buyer protection on items over a certain value . eBay can do all of this because they charge fees for there ads. If eBay was a free service then how could they be expected to cover people when they get scammed? it just would not work and it is impossible for Gumtree to do the same whilst running as a free site.
Its a shame you did not use a service like Paypal to pay with (also owned by ebay) because had you used paypal you would stand a great chance at getting your money back.
Good luck for next time and remember Kharma will get them in the end !!

I too wired money to a person who was supposed to send me a laptop. With more research I discovered that the same person had scammed another person with the same machine.

My experience was identical to the one you had, including the messages I received.

BEWARE WIRE TRANSFERS AND DHL "AGENTS". DHL HAS WARNINGS ABOUT SUCH FRAUD ON ITS LEGITIMATE WEBSITE AND VERIFIES THAT IT DOES NOT WORK WITH WIRE TRANSFERS.

You can check for similar scams on ripoffreport.com where scammers and con artists are exposed.

I hope everyone takes action so that these frauds can be brought to justice. Next time , be more careful.

If you believe you have been scammed, report it to both Gumtree and to the Police.

If you have original emails from scammers, the header information contained therein can be used to track down the exact internet connection they were sent from.

Scammers can, and often are, caught charged and imprisoned if accurate details are reported to appropriate authorities. This includes those operating outside Australia.

Don't be afraid to report it! Yes, you may think it embarrassing, but if you do report it, there is at least a chance of getting your money back. There is also a chance of the scammer spending some time in prison.
