HI
Really this is a shame. Its not that bad as some people do it buts its only a few.
I like to redo my ad every few days as this site is so popular that they move pages and pages behind.
I would like to be able to do this!!
I cant afford to put it at the top of the page as I am struggling with the huge rent and no-one to share.
Thanks

Hi suzanneholman@bigpond.com,

If you are posting a new version of your ad this is absolutely fine, as long as you ensure you remove the old copy first you will have no problems.

Our duplicate ad blocker will only prevent you from posting two of the same ad - user feedback always shows us that duplicate ads frustrate the community when browsing the site.

Thanks

.....hi there Esbeee,

.....unfortunately, the majority of advertisers NEVER delete their "old" ads! Which is why -- in many cases -- we often have the identical ad posted dozens of times over several weeks.

.....sometimes too, people post an IDENTICAL ad 3 or 4 times in the one day, and sometimes -- literally -- within minutes of each other, and across several categories!

.....I find it difficult to accept that Gumtree uses any "IDENTICAL AD" filtering software. Can you please confirm if this is the case?

THANKS. Smile

This is news to me too!

I've never heard of Gumtree's "duplicate ad blocker". And reading through the ads, I can't see any evidence of it (allegedly) working either. On any day, one can count up to 20 or 30 identical duplicate ads — exactly word-for-word — and even identical photos.

I can only reiterate what Vergulde has already said.

Cheers. Smile

It seems the scammers have a way around the duplicate ad thing.

Don't they, gumtree??

The following is only one of a number of repeat spammers flooding the ads pages:

Quote:
Ad ID 163907177

I am looking for indian couples to share my house in Lalor. No bond required. House is fully furnished. Rent is $500 per month. call 0423430922

The "View Posters Other Ads" search shows this identical ad posted SIX times today alone, plus another THREE times yesterday — for a grand total of NINE duplicated posts!

So I ask you Esbee; can you please confirm that:

"Our duplicate ad blocker will only prevent you from posting two of the same ad"?

Or are you tacitly letting those "in the know" get away with repeatedly contravening Gumtree's Terms and Conditions? And please bear in mind that this particular spammer has been doing this for weeks now! It's certainly NOT an isolated incident.

Cheers. Smile

And this is another serial spammer flooding the ad pages:

Quote:
Ad ID 163918623

Melbourne Burwood share house walk 8 mins to Deakin University, walk 2 mins to Tram Stop 75, and 1 min walk to Bus stop 767. $150 per week per room include water gas electricity & internet. 1 single bed, study table & wardrobe. The house has Fridge & washing machine to share. Contact +61401996067.

Maybe Gumtree needs a "Name and Shame" forum where we can post these people's telephone numbers so as to make it easier to identify spammers?

Cheers. Smile

Geoff,

This is the last you'll see of esbeee... you've caught them at their own game, so true to form they'll run and hide for another six months, then come back with their standard 'no help' replies.

....

I have noticed something though.... Ages ago, when the scammers first started their usernames were a bunch of alternate letters like lglglglg344 or hththt99 .... I notice this site belongs to kijijijijiji hhhmmmmm

.....hey guys,

.....I specifically asked Esbeee a reasonable question:

Quote:
I find it difficult to accept that Gumtree uses any "IDENTICAL AD" filtering software. Can you please confirm if this is the case? THANKS.

.....I think the fact that the person posting as "Esbeee" has chosen NOT to answer a legitimate query (despite allegedly being part of "The Gumtree Team") is a fairly obvious indicator that the Gumtree site IS a scammers paradise!

.....my guess is that eBay (Gumtree's parent company in the US) is operating this site, as "Gumtree", in individual countries world-wide to carry the "overflow" of scams and spammers from eBay themselves. This is reinforced by the simple fact that MOST of the major scams here originate outside Australia's borders. As far as the multiple REPEAT ads goes, eBay... uh, sorry...Gumtree, simply don't care.

.....WHY WOULD THEY?

.....the ball's in your court Esbeee!

Cool

Hey guys,

In my initial response to the poster of this thread, a legitimate user, I explained that the system will permit her to post new versions of her ad as long as she removes the old version first.

Unfortunately spammers and scammers will always find ways to get around our moderation techniques which is why we divert a huge number of resources to preventing and removing non compliant ads.

We also always ask for the support of the Gumtree community in reporting these abusers so that together we can help to build the best, free online classifieds for you all to use.

Thanks
The Gumtree Team
